Web Girls… Web Girls…?

Are you thinking maybe naughty downloads?  Feminists? Alternative Lifestyles? Do all you guys out there need to divert your ears for the next few minutes? OK - the last thing this Web Girl  wants to do is factionalize WebPeople.  The coolest thing about the web, after all, is it’s so opaque.  You cruise in and out of sites that could be put up by a guy or girl, a Fortune 500 company or an 8 year-old.

So why my little WebGrrl point of view each week?  Well, first, I’m a girl    - something those two WebTalk Guys aren’t.  So, you know, I have an angle! Secondly, Girls - Women - are the fastest growing users of the Internet.    It’s snowballing:  more women author sites, more women browse, more women inspired to have their say, make their mark, join a community.  Setting the philosophy of those one-stop-shop megabusiness aside - the way to garner some attention and a following is to specialize.  Girl stuff on the web is small but growing.

For the uninitiated…
Who are we - these women on the web?
Well, for one thing, we’re pretty adept at coining phrases:
NetChicks
Cyberfems
GeekGirls
CyberSisters
UrlGirls

(that’s Url U-R-L, you know Uniform Resource Locator - the web address)
The Original Amazons
NetGirls
Wired Women
BroadBand

In future WebGirl Moments, I’ll explore what makes the Girls on the
Web get weak in the knees, what excites us about the Internet, what we see as the hot topics, what local cybergirls are creating and why. For instance, I bet you didn’t know there is a huge organization called WebGrrls International. With the Northwest being a hotbed of web activity, you may not be surprised to know the Seattle Chapter of WebGrrls International is the 2nd oldest of the organization  - starting in 1995.   They have a membership of over 1,200.  And quite a lot of political influence I might add.

Are you impressed to know this driving force were honored with their own DAY?  Both Governor Gary Locke and Mayor Paul Schell proclaimed October 22 "Seattle WebGrrls Day". Their proclamation read, in part:  "International Webgrrls and its Washington State members have been tireless advocates of women entering the field of technology in Washington State, and I encourage all citizens to join me in honoring the commitment and dedication of this extraordinary organization.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Gary Locke, Governor of the state of
Washington, do hereby proclaim October 22, 1998 as INTERNATIONAL WEBGRRLS DAY Is that just wonderfully progressive or what?

So start your WebGrrl journey by visiting the Seattle WebGrrls: www.seattlewebgrrls.org/ - that’s GRRLS …G-R-R-L-S, by the way…just the way your WebTalkGrrl spells it.

Back...

Please tell this WebGrrl what exactly you want to hear in future broadcasts...because basically your point of view could very well be mine as well.

WebGrrl highly suggests you launch yourself into grrl-site-dom by using this radical jewel of a directory...Femina!
